Connected futures, how technology available to the agricultural industry can yield growth.
13 September 2021
We believe the answer lies in connectivity and data. (And a total realignment of tradition!) Aside from the advances in machinery that have seen expansion of speed and productivity on machinery and therefore more efficient cultivation, the Agri-tech revolution (albeit in early days) is seeing emerging technologies that will likely further increase yield, sustainability, resilience and output.
Yet, agriculture is less digitised compared with other industries, globally. The pressures (in a very reduced nutshell)
· Demand for food is ever increasing, and with supply chain constraints due to the events of the past 2 years (let’s not talk Brexit and Covid) let alone land and farming inputs · Increasing environmental issues and social pressures… climate change, sustainability, higher standard for farm animal welfare etc.
By embracing a digital transformation, the industries, we at DueTrade sit across, will hopefully begin to address the ever-increasing forces against them. Infrastructure, we know, is a problem – to unlock the value that the IoT holds, the industry must make use of digital applications and analytics, requiring high bandwidth, resiliency and connective technologies such as PLWAN, 5G and LEO satellites. **It is worth noting that the UK is on track with Forbes rating the UK (2018) the highest in business friendliness, scoring well on technological readiness. If past advances were more mechanical: machinery and the likes, the now more sophisticated digital tools will be the next leap for productivity: Technology that increases faster decision making, better risk and variability management to optimise yield and in turn economics. The goal (challenge) is therefore two-fold. Infrastructure needs to be in place to enable the use of connectivity and where it already exists, business cases need to be made for adoption.
